FAQs on why imported images appear rotated in AutoCAD
1. Why do my imported images appear rotated?
2. How can I resolve this issue and keep my drawing well georeferenced?
3. I do not have to strictly work with a georeference system. What can I do?
When importing imagery using Plex-Earth, you might encounter cases where the imagery may appear rotated. There are several reasons why this occurs.
1. Why do my imported images appear rotated?
This is a result of the transformation of the Earth's three-dimensional, spherical coordinate system to a two-dimensional X-Y coordinate system in AutoCAD, so, practically, it is the effect of your drawing being georeferenced. The angle of the image's rotation depends on the coordinate system, and this is why it may differ for each country, system, or even area.
2. How can I resolve this issue and keep my drawing well georeferenced?
There are two ways to resolve this situation and keep the concerning georeference:
1) Clipping of the Image
First of all, make sure that you have applied the proper coordinate system for your area.
If the coordinate system is not correct, you will need to change it and import your imagery again. If your drawing is georeferenced, through Plex-Earth's Quick Georeference Method, you can skip this check.
Once the appropriate coordinate system has been chosen, the way to resolve this issue and keep the image’s correct georeference is to adjust the shape of the image.
There are two ways to adjust the shape of the image and completely remove this rotation effect.
- Create a rectangle for your area and import a mosaic by selecting a polyline, using this rectangle. This way, Plex-Earth will create a mosaic that will fill your selected area, and the rotation effect will not be visible.
- Alternatively, you can create a clipping for the imported imagery and give it the shape you want.
2) Apply a transformation to the georeference of the drawing via Site Area
If you don't just want to adjust the image shape, but you want to apply a rotation to the whole drawing to fix this situation, you can apply a rotation to the whole drawing, using the Site Area functionality. This way, you will have a well-georeferenced drawing with an adjusted coordinate system.
First of all, make sure that you have applied the proper coordinate system for your area.
If the coordinate system is not correct, you will need to change it and import your imagery again. If your drawing is georeferenced, through Plex-Earth's Quick Georeference Method, you can skip this check.
Then select Site Area from the ribbon and select your area.
In the preview, go to Transform and select Rotate. Apply the rotation and then choose Apply to drawing.
3. I do not have to strictly work with a georeference system. What can I do?
In this case, you can just choose to insert the image as a raster and then use the AutoCAD tools to rotate/move the raster image.
❗ WARNING! By rotating the imagery, the image will lose its georeference accuracy. Moreover, the rotation will not be fixed, so any further import of images done will, again, have a rotation when compared to the drawing objects.
