USGS topographic maps repackage geographic information system (GIS) data in traditional map form; this benefits non-specialist map users, as well as applications that need traditional maps. These make use of contour lines to show the shape of the earth's surface. These may also show many other kinds of geographic features, including roads, railroads, rivers, streams, lakes, buildings, built-up areas, boundaries, place or feature names, mountains, elevations, survey control points, vegetation types, and much more.
These maps also include layers not present on most traditional topographic maps, such as aerial photos and shaded relief images.
