When working with Civil 3D terrain surfaces, you may need to edit, update, or rebuild the surface to improve accuracy or apply new modifications.
In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to:
Import terrain elevation data using Plex-Earth
Insert the data as a Civil 3D surface
-
Modify the surface by:
Adding a boundary
Removing TIN triangles
Reviewing surface properties
Update surface operations
Rebuild the surface to apply all changes
This workflow helps ensure your terrain model remains accurate and optimized for analysis and design.
1. Import a Civil 3D Surface with Plex-Earth
Start Plex-Earth → Select Create Terrain → Choose Civil 3D Surface. Civil 3D Surface should appear now in your Civil 3D Prospector.
More details about terrain creation can be found here.
2. Adjust the Civil 3D Surface
Surface editing allows you to refine and control the terrain model.
Common edits include:
Adding boundaries
Removing triangles
Modifying elevation data
Rebuilding the surface
3. Add a Boundary to the Surface
Adding a boundary trims the surface to the desired area.
To add a boundary:
Open the Prospector
Expand Surfaces
Right-click your surface
Select Definition → Boundaries
Click Add
Next:
Name the boundary
Select the polyline representing your desired outer boundary
Click OK
Civil 3D will trim the surface based on the selected boundary.
4. Remove Unwanted Triangles
In some cases, the surface may include TIN triangles that distort the terrain representation.
To remove them:
Right-click the surface in Prospector
Select Edit Surface Style
Enable Triangles visibility.
Then:
Select the surface in the drawing
Open the TIN Surface ribbon
Go to:
Modify → Edit Surface → Delete Line
Select the triangle edges you want to remove.
After deleting the lines, the surface will update automatically.
5. Review Surface Properties
Civil 3D keeps track of all surface changes through operations.
To review them:
Right-click the surface
Select Surface Properties
Under the Definition tab, you will see operations such as:
Add boundary
Add contours
Delete lines
Transform operations
These operations define how the surface was built.
Civil 3D processes them in sequence, meaning the order of operations can affect the final terrain.
6. Add Surface Data (Contours)
To add a boundary:
Open the Prospector
Expand Surfaces
Select Definition → Contours
Click Add
Next:
Select the Contours
Adjust the Settings
Click OK
Civil 3D will include these contours on the surface.
7. Remove Surface Data
Right-click the surface
Select Surface Properties
Under the Definition tab, select Operation to remove
Select Apply → Rebuild → OK
Civil 3D reconstructed the surface, ignoring the data.
8. Update Surface Operations
Sometimes Civil 3D reports failed operations.
You can inspect them in:
Surface Properties → Definition → Operations
Common issues occur when operations are executed in the wrong order.
Use the arrow controls to reorder operations.
Once arranged correctly:
Click Apply
Rebuild the surface if prompted.
9. Rebuild the Surface
If the surface is marked as Out of Date, it means some edits have not yet been applied.
You will see an exclamation icon in the Prospector.
To rebuild the surface:
Right-click the surface
Select Rebuild Out of Date Items
Civil 3D will regenerate the terrain using all current surface operations.
After rebuilding, the warning icon disappears, and the surface reflects all applied modifications.
